According to a Reuters report dated September 5, the Trump administration is poised to introduce regulations as early as this month aimed at restricting or prohibiting the import of Chinese drones and medium- to heavy-duty vehicles (those weighing more than 4.5 tons), citing concerns over national security risks. This move follows a pattern where the United States has previously targeted Chinese automobiles and trucks on similar grounds. Notably, the U.S. Department of Commerce has yet to release evidence or specific details regarding these new rules. Moreover, this measure aligns with the policy trajectory set by the Biden administration. Earlier this year, in January, the Biden administration solidified regulations that will effectively bar nearly all Chinese cars and trucks from the U.S. market starting at the end of 2026, with potential restrictions also looming over drone systems.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning articulated China's firm opposition to the U.S. side's broad and indiscriminate application of the national security concept, which she argued amounts to unwarranted interference in normal economic and trade exchanges. China, she emphasized, will take all necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests. Currently, China holds a dominant position in the commercial drone sector, manufacturing between 70% to 80% of the world's commercial drones. Over half of the commercial drones used in the United States are produced by China's DJI. Despite facing various forms of suppression, Chinese companies have managed to sustain their leading edge in the market.
