U.S. Federal Judge Reed O'Connor in Texas has announced that a hearing on the criminal settlement agreement between Boeing and the Department of Justice will take place on August 28. Should the agreement be approved, Boeing would be spared prosecution for the two 737 MAX air disasters, a move that has met with strong opposition from the families of the victims. Under the terms of the agreement, Boeing has pleaded guilty and agreed to pay $1.1 billion in settlement funds. Of this amount, $243.6 million is a new fine, $444.5 million will be allocated to a fund for the victims of the air disasters, and the remainder will be used to enhance compliance and safety systems. The judge will consider the opinions of all parties involved before making a decision on whether to approve the agreement.
