The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States has announced its intention to comprehensively upgrade its air traffic control (ATC) system by 2025, with a focus on phasing out the use of floppy disks and the Windows 95 operating system. Chris Rochelle, the FAA's head, emphasized that these outdated systems will be replaced with modern 21st-century technologies. Presently, many ATC towers and facilities across the U.S. continue to rely on 20th-century technologies, utilizing paper slips and floppy disks for data transfer, while their computer systems operate on the now-obsolete Windows 95. Despite their potential resistance to certain contemporary cyber threats, the significant aging of these systems poses a substantial risk to critical U.S. infrastructure. Consequently, the FAA is committed to a thorough overhaul of the entire system.
