Microsoft announced that starting from the Windows security update in January 2027, it will block by default the mounting of USB drives and external hard drives using the ReFS file system, aiming to enhance data security and reduce risks. Previously, starting from the October 2026 cumulative update, an audit mechanism has been enabled by default when such devices are connected to Windows systems, recording Event ID 524. Users who need to continue using them can manually adjust the settings via Group Policy or the Registry. Microsoft recommends that users complete data migration or configuration adjustments before January 2027.
