Ledger has launched its new Atom device—a gadget that looks like a smartphone but is actually designed as a crypto asset signing and data terminal. The device operates on a hardened version of the Android open-source operating system, paired with an independent Ledger OS. While everyday apps run in the Android environment, sensitive tasks—such as those involving private keys and transaction signatures—automatically switch over to the secure Ledger OS mode. Atom offers Wi-Fi connectivity and can access 4G and 5G networks through a data-only eSIM. However, it does not support cellular voice calls, text messaging, or emergency call functions, meaning it can’t serve as a direct replacement for a regular smartphone. Internet calling features depend on third-party apps and network availability.
