American space exploration technology company (SpaceX) has announced plans to expand its communications business scope beyond just providing Starlink satellite internet services, aiming to become one of the major global mobile communications operators. SpaceX plans to leverage its continuously expanding Starlink satellite network to provide direct communication services to ordinary smartphones, freeing them from the limitations of traditional terrestrial base station networks. This strategy will enable Starlink to serve not only the home broadband, enterprise network, and remote area internet access markets but also enter the mobile communications industry. The company stated that with the continuous launch of new-generation Starlink satellites, users will still be able to communicate via satellite networks using ordinary mobile phones in areas without terrestrial cellular signal coverage. SpaceX has established partnerships with multiple mobile communications operators to share spectrum resources and network capabilities, enabling existing smartphones to access satellite services without modification. Despite facing challenges such as regulatory approvals, spectrum resource allocation, network capacity construction, and competition with traditional telecommunications companies, SpaceX is transforming Starlink into a comprehensive communications platform covering home broadband, enterprise connectivity, the Internet of Things, and mobile communications.
