On October 3, all five of South Korea's major commercial banks found themselves under siege from hacking attacks or intrusion attempts. During these incidents, customer information from approximately 25,000 individuals at Shinhan Bank, over 100 customers at KB Kookmin Bank, and 89 customers at Hana Bank was compromised. In contrast, Woori Bank and NH NongHyup Bank managed to thwart unauthorized access attempts, thereby safeguarding their customers' data from any potential leaks. The hackers behind the attack on Shinhan Bank are believed to be based overseas and employed sophisticated AI tools in their operations. In response to these breaches, the Financial Services Commission in South Korea has urged financial institutions to conduct thorough inspections of their computer security systems. Additionally, the police have launched a preliminary investigation into the matter.
