Reddit has announced several updated measures targeting moderators and developers. Due to the use of RSS for large-scale data scraping and automated abuse, the platform will discontinue support for RSS feed functionality starting November 13, with the public API scheduled to officially close in March 2027. Reddit recommends that moderators relying on RSS for alerts migrate their workflows using the Discord relay app on the Devvit platform, though no alternative solution is currently available for external subscription purposes. Previously, many moderators and regular users have expressed concerns over these changes, believing they will disrupt moderation tasks and daily browsing. Additionally, Reddit will advance the development of a rule hub, adjust settings related to automated moderation, and implement protective mechanisms for the legacy site Old Reddit, which will subsequently only allow access to logged-in moderators and recently active users. The platform requires permitted third-party app and bot developers to complete registration by January 12, 2027, with those failing to register by the deadline having their API access revoked. These series of adjustments aim to address issues of malicious scraping and automated traffic, while also reflecting the platform's reluctance to allow massive amounts of user-generated content to be obtained for free and its push to generate revenue through AI data licensing.
