On October 1st, a piece of exciting news emerged from the Future Great Science City in Hefei, Anhui Province: the campus dedicated to the national major engineering project, namely the Compact Fusion Energy Experimental Device (BEST) project, has been delivered and put into operation ahead of schedule. This milestone marks a pivotal stage in the construction of the device's main assembly.
Since July of this year, crucial components of the BEST device, including the vacuum vessel, thermal shield, and toroidal field magnets, have been progressively arriving at the site. Presently, all four segments of the vacuum vessel's primary components have been successfully installed, and the testing of the initial set of toroidal field magnets has been thoroughly accomplished.
The main assembly of the device has officially embarked on the 'four-ring assembly' phase, a meticulous process where core components are methodically assembled from the innermost to the outermost layers. The BEST device represents China's independently developed next-generation experimental apparatus for fusion energy combustion. It is designed to spearhead research on deuterium-tritium fusion energy combustion under prolonged reactor conditions, delve into the scientific and engineering viability of tokamak fusion reactors, and establish the technical and engineering groundwork for the future commercialization of fusion energy initiatives.
