Amazon is planning a significant expansion of its same-day delivery service, a move that could reshape the U.S. retail landscape and directly challenge Walmart's dominance in everyday consumer goods. According to Amazon's internal planning documents, the project, codenamed "Project Mercury," aims to increase the number of same-day fulfillment centers to over 1,000 by 2031, more than tenfold growth from the current approximately 85 locations. The project is expected to cost billions of dollars and has the potential to transform how Americans purchase everyday items such as fresh food, paper towels, and cough medicine.
