The Tabula Sapiens Consortium released the first version of the human multi-organ cell atlas in 2022, which analyzed nearly 500,000 cells and identified hundreds of cell types. Recently, its 2.0 version was published in the journal Cell, featuring a significantly expanded dataset that encompasses 24 donors, 28 types of tissues, and over 1.1 million cells. To minimize interference from individual differences, the study obtained multi-organ samples from the same donor whenever possible. The 2.0 version focuses on two key questions: First, by analyzing the expression of 1,635 transcription factors across 175 cell types, it distinguishes between 'specialized switches' and 'universal switches' in cells, revealing that major cell categories exhibit specific regulatory patterns across different organs. This finding holds significant implications for drug development. Second, it delves into cellular aging, identifying 3,792 aging-related genes and revealing that cellular aging exhibits significant cell-type and tissue-dependent characteristics, with no uniform aging state, providing new insights for anti-aging drug research. Additionally, the atlas has become an important data resource for AI-driven cell research.
