On September 8th, reports surfaced indicating that Amazon has given the green light to banks to commence its inaugural GBP bond issuance, with the transaction poised to kick off potentially as early as Wednesday. According to reports, the bond issuance will be segmented into four distinct tranches, featuring maturities spanning from three to nineteen years. This issuance will be orchestrated by a consortium of financial institutions, including JPMorgan Chase, Barclays, HSBC, and NatWest Group. Earlier in March of the same year, Amazon made headlines by issuing euro-denominated bonds, setting a new benchmark for corporate bond issuance in the eurozone. Subsequently, the tech giant ventured into the Swiss franc market, issuing bonds in six separate tranches. Presently, Amazon stands as the preeminent bond issuer among hyperscale companies, with securities issued equivalent to over USD 92 billion by 2026. Its total debt also tops the charts among its hyperscale peers, nearly doubling that of Microsoft. Amazon has earmarked a staggering USD 220 billion for capital expenditures this year, with CEO Andy Jassy emphasizing that a significant portion will be channeled into the burgeoning AI sector. Nevertheless, the sheer magnitude and rapid pace of these issuances have begun to take a toll on investors, who are exhibiting signs of fatigue. Recent sales have witnessed a slump in demand, with pricing spreads widening and debt costs on the rise.
