On the morning of September 8, China achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion and christening of its first 88,000-cubic-meter very large liquefied gas carrier (88KVLGC), named Chang Ping Yuan. This event marks a groundbreaking advancement in China's ability to independently design and construct very large liquefied gas carriers. The vessel, measuring approximately 230 meters in overall length, was constructed using domestically developed low-temperature welding technology, enabling China to exercise independent control over its core construction techniques.
Equipped with an LPG dual-fuel main engine and a shaft generator, the ship is capable of significantly reducing its environmental impact. Specifically, it can cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 20% and sulfur oxides and particulate matter emissions by about 90% when compared to operating in fuel oil mode. This environmental performance sets a new international benchmark.
The vessel stands out as the largest VLGC currently capable of navigating both the old and new locks of the Panama Canal simultaneously. It boasts multi-category transportation capabilities, with the ability to carry nine different types of liquefied gases, including LPG and liquid ammonia. This versatility precisely meets the escalating demand in the future global liquid ammonia shipping market, showcasing the ship's significant market adaptability and forward-thinking development.
