China has recently achieved a groundbreaking milestone by establishing a bidirectional laser communication link between a ground station and the DRO-A Earth-Moon satellite, spanning a staggering distance of over 400,000 kilometers. This marks the first-ever successful implementation of high-speed, two-way laser communication between Earth and the Moon, signifying a significant leap in China’s space communication capabilities. With this achievement, China has extended its space laser communication reach from low Earth orbit to the Earth-Moon expanse. To overcome the formidable challenge of receiving extremely faint laser signals in the depths of space, the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, a part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, successfully developed a high-speed superconducting single-photon array detector. This technological innovation played a pivotal role in enabling this remarkable breakthrough.
