A collaborative lawsuit has been lodged against Meta by numerous US states. The trial is slated to begin on August 18 in Oakland, California, and is projected to span six weeks. It's possible that Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, will testify in court. Four states, California among them, allege that Meta deliberately crafted Facebook and Instagram to be highly addictive for minors, obscuring their detrimental effects on adolescent mental health. They claim that Meta misled the public and encroached upon minors' rights, and are seeking damages estimated at around $200 billion. Another 29 states have taken legal action against Meta, accusing it of breaching the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act by unlawfully gathering children's personal data. Meta has indicated that the potential fines could soar up to $1.4 trillion, a sum nearly on par with its entire market capitalization. However, lawyers representing the plaintiffs contend that this is merely a tactic by Meta to draw attention. Furthermore, numerous other social media platforms are also confronting thousands of analogous lawsuits.
