After completing a major IPO, SpaceX's colossal Starship conducted its 13th large-scale test flight from its base in South Texas at 5:51 PM local time on Friday. During this test, all 33 Raptor engines of the Super Heavy booster successfully ignited, and approximately six minutes later, it descended into the Gulf of Mexico as planned, showing significant improvement over the previous attempt. Notably, the recovery technique involving an aerial robotic arm was not employed. After releasing 20 next-generation upgraded Starlink satellites in orbit, the Starship returned to Earth and was scheduled to plunge into the Indian Ocean about an hour after launch. The Starship embodies Musk's vision of expanding the Starlink network, enabling manned moon landings, and facilitating interstellar travel. However, its development process has been fraught with challenges, including multiple explosions and malfunctions, leading to delays. Previous flight delays had triggered a stock price decline, with shares falling 3% by Friday's close and approximately 25% over the past month, now trading below the IPO price of $135. SpaceX is fully committed to Starship development, having ceased accepting exclusive launch bookings for Falcon rockets beyond 2028. The company has already invested over $15 billion in the Starship program. The third-generation Starship has optimized its reusability, with Musk anticipating full reusability by the end of this year. NASA has signed a $4 billion contract with SpaceX for the Starship, planning to use it to send astronauts to the moon as early as 2028. However, the Starship has yet to complete a full orbital flight and must still overcome several highly challenging tasks, such as in-orbit refueling.
