On July 23 (local time), the European Commission declared that Alphabet's subsidiary, Google, has incurred a hefty fine of €890 million (roughly equivalent to $1 billion) for breaching the regulations stipulated in the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The penalties are twofold: Google has been fined €460 million for prioritizing its proprietary services within its search engine results, and an additional €430 million for imposing restrictions on app developers that prevent them from guiding users to alternative channels outside of the Play Store. Google is now mandated to devise and submit a comprehensive rectification plan within a 60-day timeframe; failure to comply will result in further financial penalties.
