Reports indicate that, in light of worries regarding the control of key assets by U.S. firms, Mastercard is mulling over the sale of a majority stake in its UK-based payment subsidiary, Vocalink, to British domestic banks. At present, the discussions within Mastercard are merely in the preliminary phase, and no formal offers have been tabled.
Vocalink serves as the core operator of the UK's retail payment system, undertaking the tasks of designing, constructing, and managing bank account-based payment systems. According to the data presented on its official website, the company handles over 90% of salary payments, more than 70% of household bill payments, and 98% of national welfare disbursements in the UK. Additionally, its system is interconnected with over 47,000 ATMs.
