On July 6, social media giant Meta disclosed in court filings submitted this Monday that the U.S. states of California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey are seeking a total of approximately $1.4 trillion in fines under their respective state laws. The four states accuse Meta of deliberately designing features on the Facebook and Instagram platforms that addict young users and of misleading the public on platform safety issues. Previously, Meta has faced repeated question over platform safety concerns, including allegations of failing to effectively protect children from sexual predators and of intentionally marketing products to users under the age of 13. Additionally, Meta is confronting other legal challenges, such as accusations of using adult videos to train AI.
