On July 1, 2026, the Stockholm Patent and Market Court in Sweden delivered a landmark judgment, ordering Google to pay nearly $2 billion—inclusive of nearly $500 million in accrued interest—in antitrust damages to Klarna's subsidiary, PriceRunner. This ruling was based on Google's unlawful prioritization of its own price comparison service in search results, marking the largest antitrust damages award in Swedish history.
PriceRunner initiated legal proceedings against Google in 2022, contending that Google's manipulation of search results to favor its in-house services resulted in substantial revenue losses for PriceRunner. While the court did find Google's actions to be illegal, it dismissed the majority of PriceRunner's claims, which had initially sought damages amounting to nearly $8 billion.
Google expressed its disagreement with the verdict and indicated that it would consider filing an appeal. It's worth noting that prior to this, both the European Union and German courts had already imposed penalties on Google in similar cases, underscoring a broader trend of regulatory scrutiny over the tech giant's business practices.
