Back in May 2026, Microsoft rolled out a handy new feature in the optional update KB5089573 for Windows 11 users. This feature empowers users to personalize the names of their local user profile folders. Before this update, the system had a rather rigid approach: it would automatically snip the first five letters from the email address and use that as the folder name. This practice frequently left users feeling exasperated. Now, users have the freedom to customize the folder name right from the get-go during the initial device setup. However, existing users are out of luck as they can't take advantage of this new feature.
