On May 30, The New York Times reported that Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and Amazon had been building considerable momentum recently, steadily closing the gap with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Starlink. However, a catastrophic explosion during a launchpad test of Blue Origin’s “New Glenn” rocket on Thursday delivered a substantial setback to both entities. The blast not only caused extensive damage to the launchpad but also forced Blue Origin and its clients—including Amazon and NASA—to confront potential project delays. Amazon had intended to utilize the rocket for satellite launches in a bid to rival Starlink, while NASA had recently chosen Blue Origin to take part in its lunar base initiative. At present, Blue Origin is probing the cause of the incident and making arrangements to reconstruct the affected facilities.
