In April 2025, Microsoft, without prior notice, banned the Windows Hardware Program accounts of several developers behind well-known open-source projects such as VeraCrypt and WireGuard, preventing them from releasing new versions and security patches for Windows users. Microsoft claimed this move was part of its account verification process, but developers stated they had received no prior warnings or notifications. A Microsoft vice president said the issue would be resolved soon and promised to improve communication methods. Currently, the process of restoring some accounts has been initiated.
