On April 2, 2026, sources with inside knowledge disclosed that Amazon is currently deep in advanced discussions to acquire Globalstar, a satellite communications firm and long-term partner of Apple. The move is aimed at bolstering Amazon's low-Earth orbit satellite business to better compete with SpaceX's Starlink service. As the primary infrastructure provider for Apple's 'Satellite Emergency SOS' functionality, Globalstar witnessed a remarkable 24% spike in its stock price following the news, propelling its market capitalization to $8.81 billion. Notably, Apple owns roughly 20% of Globalstar's shares, adding a layer of complexity to Amazon's acquisition efforts, which now necessitate concurrent negotiations with Apple. Amazon's low-Earth orbit satellite initiative, dubbed Leo, has already deployed around 200 satellites and envisions constructing a vast network of 7,700 satellites. Nevertheless, its progress trails behind that of Starlink, which has already launched over 9,500 satellites and offers internet services to over 9 million users globally.
