China’s lithium-ion battery production capacity has surpassed 2,600 GWh, with Jiangsu Province taking the lead in operational capacity. Liu Yong, Secretary-General of the Energy Storage Application Branch under the China Industrial Association of Power Sources, emphasized that over the forthcoming five years, lithium-ion battery energy storage systems are poised to assume a pivotal, leading role in the commercialization of emerging energy storage technologies. Technologies for long-duration energy storage, such as flow batteries, are also anticipated to encounter development prospects; however, they must still surmount numerous challenges to penetrate mature markets. During the "15th Five-Year Plan" period, a pronounced concentration effect is expected among leading firms in China’s energy storage sector, accompanied by accelerated industry restructuring, increasingly mature business models, and a globalizing energy storage market. Nevertheless, intense competition in overseas markets will compel companies to elevate their technological standards, necessitating collaboration and a unified global approach among Chinese energy storage firms. Liu Yong advised that industry regulatory bodies should bolster top-tier industrial planning and design, refine policy mechanisms, and strengthen regulatory oversight of industry safety risks.
