The Kingdom of Bhutan has made the strategic decision to transition its national identity information storage for around 800,000 citizens onto the Ethereum network. This move aims to take advantage of Ethereum's immutable and decentralized nature, thereby enhancing its identity management system. Previously, the country's identity information was stored on the Polygon blockchain. And before that, the Hyperledger Indy platform was in use. Aya Miyaguchi, who serves as the President of the Ethereum Foundation, announced that the integration of the national ID system with Ethereum has been successfully accomplished. It is anticipated that the migration of all resident identity credentials will be fully completed by the first quarter of 2026. The migration ceremony was a significant event, graced by the presence of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck.
