SoftBank aims to repurpose a defunct Sharp LCD panel factory in Japan into a state-of-the-art data center, dedicated to running AI agents jointly developed with OpenAI. The company anticipates signing an acquisition agreement by Friday to secure the factory facilities and adjacent land in Sakai City, Osaka, for approximately 100 billion yen. Construction of the data center is scheduled to commence in fiscal year 2025, with operations set to begin in 2026. Initially, the center will boast a power supply capacity of 150 megawatts, poised to expand to 250 megawatts by fiscal year 2028.
