The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has voiced significant concerns about the state of competition within the cloud computing market, particularly emphasizing the dominant positions held by Microsoft and Amazon in this sector. The CMA forecasts that the cloud computing services market will expand to a value of £9 billion by 2023, boasting an annual growth rate surpassing 30%. Nevertheless, businesses are confronted with limited options when choosing cloud computing service providers, as AWS and Microsoft each command a 40% share of customer spending in the UK market. While Google occupies the third position, its market share remains comparatively modest. The CMA highlights that "exit fees" for data migration, licensing fees, volume discounts, and interoperability challenges all contribute to the difficulties faced by businesses in switching cloud computing providers. The CMA's investigation commenced in 2022, following the UK's telecoms regulator Ofcom's initiation of market studies into Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, which subsequently led to the transfer of the cloud computing review to the CMA.
