Reports indicate that the state of Texas, USA, has temporarily halted the approval of new projects as it evaluates potential risks to the power grid. Consequently, banks have decided to delay their plans to issue bonds aimed at financing the construction of data centers associated with Anthropic PBC, a move that is part of a broader $15 billion financing arrangement. This postponement occurs at a critical juncture for Anthropic, which is currently making substantial investments in computing infrastructure to lay the groundwork for its anticipated initial public offering (IPO). As a result, banks now face the prospect of carrying this debt on their balance sheets for an extended duration.

The financing effort, spearheaded by Morgan Stanley, has successfully raised approximately $15 billion to support the construction of a data center in Hubbard, located near Waco, Texas. Individuals with knowledge of the situation disclosed that banks initially intended to sell between $5 billion and $7 billion worth of bonds to high-yield bond investors in September, with the aim of refinancing a portion of the loan. However, given the current circumstances, these sales are now expected to be staggered over the course of the next year. The debt package comprises a $14.2 billion one-year loan and a $1.4 billion five-year revolving credit facility. Lenders are optimistic about refinancing a segment of the loan through engagement with high-yield bond investors.
