Microsoft unveiled its quarterly earnings report for the period ending September 30, revealing results that not only met but surpassed analyst projections. This strong performance propelled its stock price upward by over 6% in after-market trading on Wednesday. Throughout the quarter, Microsoft achieved a revenue milestone of $92.28 billion, marking a significant 19% increase compared to the same period last year. Moreover, its adjusted earnings per share stood at $4.89, both figures comfortably exceeding market forecasts.

In this quarter, Microsoft's aggregate capital expenditures and finance leases soared to $45.2 billion, reflecting a notable year-over-year surge of approximately 30%. For the first time, Microsoft chose to disclose its Azure cloud revenue in dollar terms within its earnings report. This quarter, Azure cloud revenue soared to $33.17 billion, representing a robust 48% increase from the previous year, and surpassing market expectations by a considerable margin.

Additionally, Microsoft made a strategic shift in its earnings reporting methodology for the first time since 1998. The company now reports its results through two distinct operating segments. This marks a departure from the previous 11-year practice, where Microsoft had maintained three segments, each corresponding to its Azure, Office, and Windows businesses. This adjustment reflects Microsoft’s evolving business landscape and strategic focus.
