In a groundbreaking collaboration, the National Key Laboratory of Optical Communication Technology and Networks, part of China Information and Communication Technologies Group, joined forces with Pengcheng Laboratory and FiberHome Fujikura Optical Fiber Technology Co., Ltd. Together, they executed a real-time bidirectional transmission trial utilizing 24-core multi-core optical fibers, reaching an astonishing total transmission capacity of 3.2 petabits per second. This milestone marks a new global record for single-fiber bidirectional real-time optical transmission. Earlier in March of the same year, the same research consortium had set a precedent with a transmission rate of 2.5 Pb/s, and this latest feat signifies a notable enhancement of roughly 28%.
