The Dutch Tax and Customs Administration has made the strategic decision to scrap its previous intention of fully transitioning its office operations to the Microsoft 365 public cloud. Instead, it will now rely on on-site servers and progressively incorporate European open-source software solutions. This policy shift encompasses the tax authority, customs departments, and welfare agencies. Initially, the Dutch government had set a timeline to commence the migration process in 2025 and wrap it up by the end of 2026, with around 5,000 employees already having made the switch to the new system. However, in July of this year, the government put the brakes on the project and has now formally announced its intention to pursue a dual-track strategy that combines on-site deployment with open-source software integration.
