On October 14, foreign media outlets reported that Ukrainian drones had targeted one of Russia's largest data centers, which is managed by Sberbank. According to statements from company officials, the attack did not impede banking services. The incident took place in the Saratov region, situated along the Volga River in Russia. This attack follows three previous strikes on data centers owned by the Russian tech conglomerate Yandex, which occurred in the week prior. Ukraine has indicated that these actions were taken in retaliation for Russia's attacks on Ukrainian data infrastructure. Both Sberbank and Yandex are prominent Russian tech firms and leading innovators in the field of artificial intelligence. In 2024, RIA Novosti reported that the Balakovo data center, which was the focal point of the attack, spans roughly 55,000 square meters and is slated to accommodate one of Russia's most powerful supercomputers, initially projected to be operational by 2027. Given its proximity to the Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant and the Saratov Hydroelectric Station, the data center plays a crucial role in terms of energy and infrastructure. As of now, neither Yandex nor Sberbank has provided clarity on whether the attack resulted in any damage to the supercomputing equipment.
