On October 14, it was announced that the Working Party 5D (WP5D) meeting, operating under the aegis of Study Group 5 (SG5) within the Radiocommunication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), is scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from September 28 to October 8, 2026. This gathering marks the ninth session of WP5D in the preparatory cycle leading up to the 2027 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-27). The WP5D working group is chiefly tasked with addressing issues related to the technology, operations, and spectrum management of the terrestrial components of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) systems. During this meeting, discussions will center on the allocation of new frequency bands to support IMT and direct-to-satellite mobile phone services, as well as the development of submission processes and templates for forthcoming 6G wireless technologies. Furthermore, the meeting will entail a review of draft reports from preparatory sessions for WRC-27 and an examination of research on interference protection standards for IMT systems emanating from direct-to-satellite mobile phone networks.
