According to two sources familiar with the matter, earlier this year, Mississippi-based power company Entergy warned Amazon that during peak electricity demand, it would have to cut off grid power supply to Amazon's data centers in the state to ensure power for other users. Local power companies rarely disconnect large customers, but this previously unreported warning reflects the soaring electricity demand from AI cloud providers, which is forcing power companies to adopt new measures to balance consumption. It is reported that Entergy's warning prompted AWS to overhaul its automatic power supply switching system, which is used to switch data centers from the public grid to backup power sources such as gas generators when necessary.
