Japan's Toshiba plans to double its production capacity for mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs) aimed at artificial intelligence data centers by fiscal 2027. To achieve this, Toshiba intends to invest approximately 60 billion yen to expand its production facilities in the Philippines, marking its first large-scale investment in the HDD business in nearly five years. In addition to adding production lines, Toshiba will also introduce new products with up to a 40% increase in storage capacity per disk. Looking ahead, Toshiba will continue to invest capital with the goal of achieving mass production of 65TB-class hard drives by 2030 and ultimately reaching mass production of 100TB-class hard drives. Currently, the demand for HDD storage in AI data centers continues to grow. Compared to solid-state drives (SSDs), which offer faster read and write speeds, HDDs cost only about one-twentieth as much. Additionally, tight supply of memory chips has further driven up demand for HDDs.
