On August 17, Nikkei Asia reported that South Korea is devising plans to build underwater data centers, with the aim of discovering new spaces for AI infrastructure. In April of this year, South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries chose Ulsan as the location for a demonstration project, which could potentially set the stage for future, larger-scale initiatives to construct a comprehensive undersea AI infrastructure complex. Ulsan stands as South Korea's automotive and shipbuilding industry epicenter. The project will install servers and other equipment in large units akin to shipping containers, which will then be submerged into the seabed at a depth of 20 meters. These units can be spliced (Note: The term "splicing" is retained for its specific technical connotation, referring to the connection or joining of components) and expanded to house up to 100,000 servers. The pilot project is anticipated to cost 51.1 billion won (roughly $35.4 million), with trials slated to commence as early as this year and the construction of a larger-scale commercial complex set to begin in 2031. The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology is spearheading the project, with the South Korean government working in collaboration with SK Telecom, Lotte Engineering & Construction, Posco, and other entities. Additionally, remote monitoring robots are also in the pipeline for development.
