Based on information from individuals with knowledge of the situation, the European Commission is on the verge of publishing initial findings that accuse Meta's Facebook and Instagram of leveraging addictive design elements and algorithmic 'rabbit hole effects' to foster child addiction. Initiated in May 2024, the investigation centers on the potential adverse impacts these platforms may have on children's physical and mental well-being, encompassing concerns such as the absence of robust age verification mechanisms and permitting underage users to create accounts. Should these violations be substantiated, Meta could be subject to a fine amounting to as much as 6% of its global annual revenue.
