On June 9th, Meta unveiled its plans to invest a substantial $115 million in establishing the complimentary training initiative, dubbed the 'American Workforce Academy'. This move is aimed at mitigating the scarcity of skilled labor in the realm of AI data center construction. The program, spanning five weeks, is being rolled out in collaboration with CBRE and the Associated Builders and Contractors of America. Pilot enrollments are currently underway in Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana, and Texas.
The training curriculum is meticulously designed to hone skills essential for data center construction. Upon graduation, participants will be presented with direct employment prospects at Meta's data center construction sites. These job opportunities will be facilitated by contractors engaged in the respective projects.
Meta's proactive stance is a strategic response to the annual deficit of 349,000 workers plaguing the U.S. construction industry, with a particular emphasis on the dearth of electricians and HVAC technicians. It's worth noting that Meta had previously initiated a fiber optic installation training program, which garnered an impressive 35,000 applications within a mere seven days of its inception.
