On Tuesday, data center operator IREN made an announcement regarding a procurement deal with Dell. The agreement, valued at roughly $1.6 billion, will see the introduction of NVIDIA's air-cooled Blackwell systems. This strategic move is set to bolster IREN's computing capabilities and keep pace with the escalating demands within the artificial intelligence (AI) landscape. In the context of the AI industry, the rapid development of AI technologies has led to a soaring demand for computing power. Data centers play a crucial role in providing the necessary infrastructure to support AI applications, and upgrading computing systems is essential to meet this growing need. This particular transaction is intricately linked to a previously inked five-year cloud AI services contract with Dell, worth $3.4 billion. The newly acquired Blackwell systems are earmarked for deployment at IREN's existing data center situated on the Childress campus in Texas. Operations are anticipated to commence by early 2027. The procurement cost encompasses a comprehensive range of equipment and services. This includes graphics processing units (GPUs), which are vital for handling complex AI computations, servers that form the backbone of data center operations, storage solutions for data management, and networking components to ensure seamless connectivity. Payments for these items and services will be made post-delivery. Once the contract comes into effect, IREN is projected to witness a significant uptick in its annual recurring revenue. It is expected to surge from $3.7 billion to $4.4 billion. In a related development earlier this month, NVIDIA disclosed its plan to invest up to $2.1 billion in IREN. Moreover, the two entities also entered into a $3.4 billion AI cloud services cooperation agreement, further solidifying their collaborative efforts in the AI domain.
