Microsoft plans to phase out the classic Remote Desktop client by 2026, fully promoting the Windows App as a modern alternative for remote desktop access. Microsoft emphasizes that the Windows App incorporates numerous improvements in reliability, cross-platform consistency, and security. In terms of reliability, through transport layer optimization and RDP multi-path technology, the Windows App can better handle network fluctuations, ensuring a more robust connection process. Regarding cross-platform consistency, the Windows App supports Start menu integration and split-screen layouts on Windows, Spotlight search and remote app switching on macOS, enhanced file transfer functionality on the Web, and added support for external displays and Surface mice on iOS. From a security perspective, the Windows App integrates Microsoft Intune mobile application management, supporting data loss prevention policies and keyboard input protection. Microsoft plans to phase out the Windows and Web versions of the Remote Desktop client on May 27, with support for the Windows client in Azure Government and Azure 21Vianet cloud environments ending on September 28.
