On Sunday, Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, reported that its data center in the UAE encountered a brief power disruption. This incident was triggered by sparks and a subsequent fire, which were caused by an object striking the facility. Notably, the UAE is currently facing retaliatory missile and drone strikes from Iran. When questioned by Reuters about the potential link between the power outage and these attacks, AWS refrained from either confirming or denying any connection.
AWS detailed that at approximately 4:30 AM Pacific Standard Time, a fire erupted in one of its availability zones within the UAE data center, following the impact of an object. In response, the local fire department promptly cut off the power supply to facilitate firefighting efforts. AWS anticipates that it will take several hours to fully restore connectivity to the affected availability zone. Meanwhile, the other availability zones within the UAE data center continue to operate without disruption.
