On September 26, 2025, Microsoft made a significant announcement: it had barred the Israeli military from accessing certain of its cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This decision is specifically aimed at curbing the utilization of these technologies for the large-scale surveillance of Palestinian civilians. In an internal memo, Brad Smith, the Vice Chairman and President of Microsoft, formally declared this move. Prior to this, media sources like The Guardian had reported that the Israeli government had been storing recordings and data from up to one million Palestinian phone calls per hour on Microsoft's Azure cloud service. This practice raised serious concerns about privacy and human rights, prompting Microsoft to take this decisive action.
