Openreach is deploying Ciena Waveserver systems powered by WaveLogic 6 coherent technology to expand its Optical Spectrum Extended Access (OSEA) wholesale portfolio across the UK, adding 3.2 Tbps of scalable capacity over diverse fiber routes. The deployment will carry 400G and 800G client traffic over dedicated 1.6 Tbps coherent wavelengths and will support connectivity between data centers, cable landing stations, core network locations and other high-capacity infrastructure sites.
The new infrastructure introduces national 800G services into Openreach’s wholesale portfolio for the first time. Ciena’s Waveserver platform provides up to 32 × 400G services in a 2RU chassis, giving Openreach a higher-density platform for scaling wholesale optical connectivity. Openreach said the network will support private cloud connectivity, data center interconnection, links between international cable landing stations and data centers, and resilient services using geographically diverse fiber routes.
Ciena is also providing managed services to support deployment, proactive monitoring and maintenance of Openreach’s OSEA optical infrastructure. Openreach operates the UK’s largest wholesale broadband network and serves more than 680 communications providers. The company said the optical expansion is intended to address increasing bandwidth requirements from cloud services, international subsea traffic, data centers, AI applications and Critical National Infrastructure.

Analysis
The significance of the Openreach deployment is that 1.6 Tbps coherent transmission is moving beyond field trials and performance demonstrations into a wholesale service architecture. Openreach is not simply testing a 1.6T wavelength: it is using the technology as the transport layer for customer-facing 400G and 800G services. That provides another commercial validation point for the latest generation of high-baud coherent optics as operators prepare their networks for increasingly dense data center, cloud and subsea traffic.
The architecture is particularly relevant to Scale Across networking. AI infrastructure is increasingly distributed among multiple data centers, cloud regions and specialized compute facilities, creating demand for higher-capacity optical connections outside individual AI clusters. Cable landing stations are another important part of that topology because international subsea capacity must ultimately connect into terrestrial data centers and cloud infrastructure. Openreach’s combination of 1.6T wavelengths, 800G client services and diverse UK fiber routes places these technologies directly into that emerging inter-data-center transport layer.
The deployment also extends a growing series of commercial and production-network validations for Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 generation. Converge Digest has tracked 1.6 Tbps WaveLogic 6 deployments and demonstrations with operators including Telstra, Vodafone Idea and e& UAE. The Openreach deployment is notable because the 1.6T optical layer is being used to create national wholesale 800G services rather than solely demonstrating the maximum achievable line rate.
