Despite receiving offers from prestigious universities such as Peking University and Fudan University, he politely declined and opted for Westlake University instead. During his interview at Peking University, he received a call from Shi Yigong, the president of Westlake University, which ultimately swayed his decision to revise his application. Wan Xinyu explained his choice of Westlake University due to its robust research environment and the allure of its semiconductor research field. Westlake University, established by social forces with key state support, is China's first new private research university. It was preceded by the Zhejiang Westlake Institute for Advanced Studies, founded in 2016 by several esteemed scientists, with Shi Yigong serving as its inaugural president.
