A research team headed by Chen Yong from the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has unveiled an innovative electro-synthesis method that transforms waste PET plastic into gram-scale glycolic acid. This breakthrough addresses the safety concerns and scalability issues inherent in traditional processes. By leveraging electrocatalytic reforming of PET, the team has managed to substantially reduce costs to approximately $1240.12 per ton, a price point that is comparable to general-purpose plastics. This achievement paves the way for the industrial application of biodegradable polyglycolic acid (PGA), setting a solid foundation for its widespread adoption.
