Rakuten Mobile and AST SpaceMobile have jointly announced the successful completion of a groundbreaking video call test, where a signal was transmitted directly from a low Earth orbit satellite to a standard smartphone in Japan. This milestone achievement paves the path for Rakuten Mobile's upcoming Rakuten Saikyo satellite service, which is set to offer satellite-direct mobile broadband services in the fourth quarter of 2026. AST has already deployed the first five LEO BlueBird commercial satellites and plans to launch an additional 60 next-generation satellites between 2025 and 2026. While Rakuten Mobile is still deciding on the spectrum band to utilize, AST has forged partnerships with over 40 operators worldwide and inked an agreement with Vodafone for the European market.
