In February 2025, Western Digital, a leading hard drive manufacturer, unveiled a comprehensive technology roadmap outlining its ambitious development plans for the forthcoming years. By the end of 2026, the company aims to introduce a groundbreaking 40TB ultra-large capacity mechanical hard drive, leveraging advanced Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology. Currently, Western Digital is in the midst of a technological shift, moving away from Energy-Assisted Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (ePMR) towards HAMR, with aspirations to eventually adopt even more sophisticated Hotspot Magnetic Recording (HDMR) technology. This transition is aimed at achieving mechanical hard drives with capacities surpassing 100TB in the not-so-distant future.
