On January 14, the U.S. Department of Commerce unveiled the interim final rule for the artificial intelligence proliferation export control framework. In response, Wei Shaojun, Vice Chairman of the China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA), offered insights in an interview. Highlighting China's status as the world's largest semiconductor market, Wei noted that numerous enterprises are esteemed major customers of American firms. He posed a thought-provoking question: While it is not uncommon for customers to impose sanctions on suppliers in a market economy, it remains perplexing when suppliers turn the tables on their customers. Wei emphasized that the semiconductor industry has evolved into a global industrial chain, rooted in international cooperation, benefiting both global semiconductor enterprises and all stakeholders across the supply chain. The steady growth of the global electronic information industry hinges on the seamless operation of this intricate web. Unfortunately, the U.S. government's unilateral revision of trade rules and imposition of additional trade barriers contravene the principles of the World Semiconductor Council (WSC) and jeopardize the very foundation of global industrial collaboration.
