On October 29, Hwang Kunil, a policy-setting member of the Bank of Korea, raised an alert that the Korean won's recent erratic movements necessitate meticulous observation. Although the export-oriented economy is reaping benefits from the soaring demand for AI chips, he maintains a cautious stance regarding the exchange rate's trajectory. He emphasized that the focus should be on the volatility and the rate of change in the exchange rate, rather than on specific numerical values. The recent oscillations in the Korean won have unfolded at a slightly quicker pace than anticipated, and its fluctuations are under intense scrutiny. Despite the persistent downward pressure on the exchange rate following adjustments to the current account surplus and foreign capital rebalancing, Hwang Kunil, who previously held the positions of Vice Minister of Strategy and Finance in South Korea and Executive Director at the World Bank, noted that the recent appreciation of the Korean won can be attributed to a significant influx of U.S. dollars. This influx stems from the global construction of AI infrastructure, which has spurred demand for specialty memory chips from South Korea's leading chip manufacturers, SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics.
